Northrop Grumman | Systems Software Analyst (UX Designer)

Experience as a user-centered designer working on numerous projects and programs for the Department of Defense (DoD) and Northrop Grumman.

As part of our User Experience Design Studio we worked with Crema, a tech innovation agency based in Kansas City, MO.
Our objective involved iterating and designing a mobile application that assists users in planning their night out or discovering recommended restaurants for an enjoyable experience.

  • Guided a team of designers through the design process for iterating on a mobile application concept provided by Crema Labs.

  • Conducted extensive user research and user testing to augment and reinforce the secondary research efforts.

Microsoft | UX Designer
Fall 2017
As part of our Senior Capstone class, we worked with Microsoft Research.
Our objective was to assist the Microsoft Research team in gaining a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of researchers’ behaviors and workflows during their search for academic literature.

  • Collaborated with a team of designers to achieve a thorough and nuanced comprehension of researchers’ behaviors and workflows while searching for academic literature.

  • Facilitated contextual inquiry sessions with scholarly researchers to gain insights.

Cerner | Project Lead & UX Designer
Fall 2017
As part of our User Experience Design Studio we worked with Cerner, an American supplier of health information technology solutions, services, devices and hardware based in Kansas City, MO.
Our objective involved studying the interactions between college students and the healthcare system. Specifically, we aimed to identify the challenges they face when engaging with healthcare services and understand how they navigate and overcome these hurdles, if at all.

  • Guided a team of designers through an extensive design process, with a strong emphasis on user research, to address the challenges college students encounter when navigating the healthcare system.

  • Performed surveys, interviews, and comprehensive secondary research to inform the ideation and testing phases.

  • Developed a visually engaging campaign aimed at raising awareness among students about local options and services available to them.

Esri | Project Co-Lead & UX Designer
Spring 2017
As part of our User Experience Design Studio we worked with Esri, an international supplier of GIS software based in Redlands, California.
Our objective was to design and develop a web-based experience that educates users about the importance and practical applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in addressing various challenges.

  • Guided a team of designers through the design process to create an online tutorial concept provided by Esri.

  • Conducted extensive user research and user testing to enrich and validate the secondary research findings.

School of Construction Management | Project Lead & UX Designer
Fall 2016
As part of our User Experience Design Studio, we worked with the School of Construction Management at Purdue University.
Our objective involved designing, creating, and developing two web applications for showcasing alumni pictures and information, as well as displaying school composites. Work continued post-class.

  • Guided a team of designers through the design process for creating two kiosk web applications.

  • Performed extensive user research and user testing to augment and reinforce the secondary research, and iterated on wireframes and mockups based on the findings.

  • Generated concepts for the physical housing of the screens to enhance the overall user experience.

UXD Learning Studio 1
Introduction to the fundamental components of human-centered design, focusing on interactive computer systems. Students learn the basic tenets and methods of user-centered design, including usability and visual design principles, user research, and low-fidelity prototyping. The course is platform-independent and encourages students to experiment with new and emerging technologies. 

UXD Learning Studio 2
Intermediate exploration of various approaches to human-centered design. Students learn intermediate research and design methods and create high-fidelity prototypes. The course is platform-independent and encourages students to experiment with new and emerging technologies.
 
UXD Learning Studio 3

Advanced exploration of cross-channel approaches to human-centered design such as service design that span digital and physical experiences. Students utilize principles of usability and user experience to create and evaluate physical prototypes. The course is platform-independent and encourages students to experiment with new and emerging technologies.
 
UXD Learning Studio 4

Advanced exploration of strategic human-centered design that aligns user experience with organizational strategy and business goals, using approaches such as agile, waterfall, and lean UX. Students utilize visual, information, and usability principles as well as various approaches and methods of human-centered design to create interactive digital prototypes. The course is platform-independent and encourages students to experiment with new and emerging technologies.
 
UXD Experience Studio 1

This course allows students to practice as a UX designer in a company-like environment. Students learn about the roles they can pursue and build foundational collaboration and project management skills. 

UXD Experience Studio 2
This course allows students to practice as a UX designer in a company-like environment. Students continue to develop their abilities and contribute significantly to projects. Projects utilize a human centered design approach to provide a rich user experience.
 
UXD Experience Studio 3

This course provides students with opportunities to practice as a UX designer in a company-like environment. Students transition into a subject matter expert and management role, mentoring junior students. Projects utilize a human-centered design approach to provide a rich user experience.
 
Design Thinking in Technology

Students in this course will engage in critical analysis of real-world problems and global challenges. They will demonstrate the ability to recognize opportunity and to take initiative in developing solutions applying the principles of human-centered design. Students will be able to communicate effectively and to work well on teams. Problems and solutions will be examined from societal, cultural, and ethical perspectives. 

Introduction To Entrepreneurship and Innovation
A survey course designed to introduce students to the concept of entrepreneurship and the commercialization of new technology, its importance in the world economy, and related career options. Students completing this course will understand entrepreneurial roles and possibilities, begin developing required skills required of successful entrepreneurs, including leadership and basic business skills, and will develop a sense of their own aptitude for entrepreneurial endeavors.

Marking And Management For New Ventures
Second in a two course sequence designed to develop a foundation of basic skills in the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation. Students completing this course will gain greater depth in areas essential to the creation and management of new ventures, including marketing and selling, finance and accounting, project management leadership, team building and ethics.

Senior Participation in EPICS
Seniors are responsible for the management tasks of planning and organizing their team project activity. They are expected to contribute expertise from their discipline to the design of the team’s projects throughout most of the design process phases of problem identification, specification development, design, production, and deployment. Seniors will also meet with the customer and mentor the freshman, sophomores and juniors.

Elementary Psychology

This is a broad survey course intended to introduce you to the field of psychology. Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify and differentiate theoretical perspectives of psychology.

  2. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of research methods.

  3. Exhibit a fundamental understanding of the biological basis of behavior.

  4. Demonstrate an understanding of classical and operant conditioning, and social cognitive learning.

  5. Identify theories and characteristics of processing, storing and retrieving memory.

  6. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the major theories of personality.

  7. Demonstrate a basic understanding of physical, cognitive and social aspects of human development.

  8. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of symptoms, classification and causes of psychological disorders.

  9. Demonstrate an understanding of how social and cultural context impacts individual behavior and cognition.

Introduction to Social Psychology
This course provides an overview of many of the fascinating topics that social psychologists study, including attitudes, aggression, altruism, attraction, authority, attachment, advertising, anonymity, and attributions, as well as some topics that start with other letters of the alphabet, such as conformity, persuasion, interdependence, stereotypes, gender roles, prejudice, deindividuation, and cognitive biases.

Introduction to Cognitive Psychology
This course provides an introduction to cognitive psychology, which is the scientific study of the mind. It covers a variety of topics related to cognition, including cognitive neuroscience, perception, visual imagery, attention, multitasking, memory, knowledge, expertise, problem solving, reasoning, decision making, language, and intelligence. The goal of the course is to provide you with a basic understanding of major theoretical views, key experimental findings, and common research procedures in cognitive psychology.
